On the 17th November 2014, the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam, Viet Nam Lawyer Association and the Foundation for East Sea Studies cooperated to hold the sixth International Conference on "The East Sea – Cooperation for Regional Security and Development" in Da Nang. The conference attracted nearly 200 scholars from different countries and diplomatic agencies of foreign nations in Viet Nam, and representatives from Vietnamese provinces and cities with a marine economy. In his opening speech at, Chairman of the Da Nang Peoples Committee, Mr. Van Huu Chien, emphasized the Vietnamese ancestors words handed through generations, which are "never to give up your oars when confronted with big waves" and "be tough in confrontation with big waves". "Issues on the East Sea can only be dealt with based on in-depth awareness of the current challenges and opportunities, on the proactive, positive effort in the spirit of cooperation of all stakeholders in the face of challenges and opportunities", said Mr. Chien.
During the two days of the conference, delegates focused on evaluating the economic strengths of the East Sea as well as the maritime scientific and trade activities, security issues, confidence-building measures at sea and preventative diplomacy. Vietnamese ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Rector of the Diplomatic Academy, believed that in a candid, objective, scientific way, the conference can thoroughly analyse the recent complex occurrences in the East Sea and the interests and policies of stakeholders, then propose to practically contribute to the peacekeeping and stability in the East Sea.
