In the Project “Local Capacity Building for Eliminating Plastic Pollution in the ASEAN Region” (ASEANO), along with Indonesia and Philippines localities, Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment selected Da Nang to the only Vietnamese city to take part in the project. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Norwegian Government are sponsors for the Project.
On April 6th, 2021, Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) coordinates with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Da Nang City to host the launching workshop for the ASEANO Project. Objectives of ASEANO are promoting plastic pollution reduction and evaluating plastic pollution impacts on the economy, social development, environment and human benefits, which emphasizes on city and urban sustainability. It is obvious that this Project is greatly suitable with national and local direction and orientation.
“Da Nang City has committed strongly to sustainable and environmentally friendly development, and aspired for becoming a green city by 2025. These reasons explained why I was extremely excited to see ASEANO Project launched in Da Nang City”, Madam Grete Lochen, Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam, shared at the workshop.
More than ten years ago, the introduction of “Da Nang Environment City Plan” of the People’s Committee of Da Nang City was a bold and innovative decision, which showed determination to protect the environment of the City. Up to date, the City has achieved positive results, which gained high evaluation of the Central Government, international organizations and communities. In order to achieve aforementioned results, Da Nang City received huge support and cooperation of ministries, central branches, international organizations, business communities and local citizens in the last 10 years. To further promote this success, based on Resolution No. 43-NQ/TW of the Politburo on “Building and developing Da Nang City until 2030, vision to 2045”, the People’s Committee of Da Nang City issued Decision No.1099/QD-UBND on April 2nd, 2021 approving “Build Da Nang City - the Environment City Plan period 2021-2030”.
The Director of Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and Environment also hosts a meeting with Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam to ask for further support from the Norwegian Government for Da Nang City in implementing “Build the Environment City Plan”, with the specific following provisions:
- Support and develop environmentally friendly technical measures such as building smart transportation system; building various parks in urban areas; preserving natural conservation areas as well as flooded areas, etc.; improving environmental landscape of ecological lakes, irrigation lakes, canals, etc.
- Collaborate develop “green” economic system as the city’s unique characteristics such as ISO 14000 environmental management model, cleaner production; waste audits, product lifecycle evaluations and other advanced management models.
- Improve capacity, management tools, environmental control: training, exchange of technology in the majors: environmental monitoring, environment impact prediction, environment treatment technology for water, wastewater, solid waste, etc.
- For waste management, besides activities included in project framework, it is helpful to introduce to Norway businesses about investment opportunities in recycling and waste treatment in Da Nang City; coordinate and support the City to promote awareness on waste classification and practice of domestic waste classification at the source; build a sustainable waste recycling management chain with the participation of businesses, private facilities related to collecting, classifying and recycling waste.
