On 5th June 2017, the Da Nang City delegation, led by Mr. Lam Quang Minh, the Director of Department of Foreign Affairs, paid a working visit to Quang Tri Province to attend the meeting with the heads of the Representative Offices of Viet Nam in foreign countries. Participating in the meeting were 25 ambassadors and 9 consul generals who have just been appointed and are on their way overseas to begin their new term 2017-2020, together with representatives of provincial leaders and representatives of relevant departments from the Central provinces of Viet Nam.

At the meeting, the representatives of the provinces and cities presented the local strengths, development potentials as well as the areas and projects calling for investment, through which, they suggested that the Vietnamese ambassadors and consul generals to foreign countries: support by providing information and assessing the capacity of foreign enterprises intending to invest in Viet Nam; promote trade, investment, tourism and cultural exchanges amongst localities on the East-West Economic Corridor; advertise the image of the central provinces and assist in accessing official development assistance (ODA) and International Non-governmental Organisation  (NGO) aid as well as enhancing the activities of the Vietnamese community in foreign countries in investing and building up the home country.

In reply, according to the heads of the Representative Offices of Viet Nam in foreign countries, though possessing great potential for development, the Central Region of Viet Nam has many limitations in image promotion and service quality, in addition it is still incapable of providing access to a huge population of visitors as well as creating a worth-living environment for investors. The ambassadors and consul generals requested the Central localities to proactively provide information to the Representative Offices and to respond promptly to the information provided by the Representative Offices. Furthermore, some common issues of the Central provinces including the need to strengthen the education of Vietnamese citizens to avoid illegal immigration to Australia; the current ineffectiveness in using the Russian Government's annual scholarship for Vietnamese provinces and the barriers in reviewing documents to recognise the Heritage of the Central Region as UNESCO World Heritage Sites were also discussed.

Concluding the meeting, the representatives of the parties committed to work together to solve the difficulties and strengthen cooperation between Central provinces and the representative offices of Viet Nam in foreign countries in order to strengthen economic diplomacy for this difficult area.
