JICA Hokkaido supported Da Nang fishery industry
In the afternoon of 20th November 2017, as authorized by the Da Nang People’s Committee, leaders of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Department of Foreign Affairs hosted a meeting with Mr. Makoto Shinkawa, Director of JICA Hokkaido International Center (Obihiro). The meeting was held to expand cooperation between JICA Hokkaido and Da Nang City in building capacity for people working in the city’s fishery industry.
Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Phu Ban expressed his deep gratitude to JICA for the operating project in Da Nang City, Stared in 2014, the project have had positive impacts on fishing industry in Da Nang City as the people's awareness of quality control and hygiene management have been improving. Besides providing refrigerating equipment for fishing boats, JICA Hokkaido has sponsored for two Da Nang official missions for short-term training in the Obihiro based training centre. Most importantly, through the project, Da Nang fishery industry can receive support from JICA expertise in development a fishing value chain, which will help to increase the value of the whole industry in the near future.
Da Nang City had been identified by the central government to be one of the five Fishery Centers for future development in Viet Nam. In the future, through these projects, Da Nang City would like to contribute to the development of primary industries, especially fishing industry in Central Vietnam and sell the marine products in not only Vietnamese market but also markets in the other countries.
During the meeting, Mr. Shinkawa express gratitude for Da Nang City's cooperation on the project focusing on establishment of the seafood value chain model. In addition he mentioned that JICA Hokkaido and Da Nang City have possibilities to make more impacts through further cooperation.
During their stay in Da Nang City, delegation will visit the local fishery companies and coal production company to progress and expand their cooperation in Da Nang City and Vietnam.
JICA Obihiro International Center (JICA Obihiro), which covers Eastern Hokkaido area, which is richly endowed with nature surrounded by mountains and oceans. This geographical feature led to the development of the primary industries; agriculture, livestock farming, and fishing; contributing to the highest food self-sufficiency in Japan. The secondary and the tertiary industries which enhance and support the primary industries are also strong in this region. JICA Obihiro has contributed to international cooperation with tremendous support from local citizens.
