The first Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM1) of APEC 2017 and related meetings ongoing in Nha Trang city in the central province of Khánh Hòa entered their sixth working day.
Over the past years, Da Nang has been chosen as the venue for many important national and international events such as the General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organisation (2002), Da Nang Investment Conference (2003), Viet Nam - Thailand Cabinet Meeting (2004), ministerial meetings within the framework of APEC Viet Nam (2006), Conference for Overseas Vietnamese Entrepreneurs (2006), East - West Economic Corridor Week (2007), Da Nang Investment Forum (2009), and ASEAN meetings in Da Nang (2009-2010). Hosting international and large-scale conferences, seminars and events has helped promote Da Nang as a peaceful, hospitable and dynamic city. In 2016, Da Nang also hosted the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG5). In 2017, it is a great honour for Da Nang to be selected as the venue to host Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC 2017). In particular, within the framework of the event, the APEC Leaders’ Week 2017 will take place with the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting being seen as the most important event, where leaders of the 21 member economies meet up once every year. With its scale and importance, APEC 2017 would truly be a golden opportunity for Da Nang in general and the local tourism sector in particular to promote its image internationally.
As the local host of some important events within the framework of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting 2017, Da Nang will be endowed with a golden opportunity to promote the city’s image to officials, tourists and international friends. However, the promotion can only be truly effective if the symbol is specific, unique and capable of reflecting the locality in order to create a powerful visual impression on the guests. Therefore, on 20th August 2016, based on the proposal of the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs, the Da Nang Party Committee and Da Nang People's Committee have approved the choice of the Red-Shanked Douc of Son Tra Peninsula as Da Nang’s symbol at APEC 2017 events in Da Nang.
The Asia - Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in 2017 (APEC 2017), is one of the largest international events which Viet Nam will host in 2017. Recognizing the importance as well as the significance of the event, from the beginning, the city has focused on directing departments and agencies to actively implement the relevant missions; in this, we cannot forget to mention protocol and logistics - one of the key factors contributing to the success of the event.
In 2017, Viet Nam will host the activities within the framework of Asia - Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). According to Mr. Pham Binh Minh - the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, hosting APEC 2017 is the focus of Viet Nam’s foreign relations until 2020, expressing Viet Nam’s determination in expanding international integration and leveraging multilateral external relations. It is noted that the city of Da Nang has been honourably chosen by the Prime Minister as the host of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017. Although this decision had to wait until APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2016 in Peru (November 2016) to be officially announced, preparation work has been put under way by the city leaders since the year 2015.
On 20th November 2016, at the 24th APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Lima, Peru, President Tran Dai Quang declared that Viet Nam would host APEC 2017, in which the highlight is the 2017 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week to be held in Da Nang. This decision has marked a milestone in the history of Da Nang’s socio-economic development and contributed to shaping the future trajectory of the city.
Within the framework of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week from 14th to 20th November 2016 in Lima, Peru, Viet Nam officially undertook the hosting of APEC from Peru. The preparation for APEC 2017 in Viet Nam has been sped up in the five areas of contents, facilities and logistics, protocol, security and health, culture and promotion. Looking back to the organisation of APEC in previous hosting countries, it can be seen that although different countries have different ways of preparing for the event, they all have the same goal to ensure the success and safety of the event at the highest level, and to impress delegates from 21 economies.
